Behind the Lens: My Photography Journey
I’ve always believed that every great wedding photo tells a story. But it’s not just about capturing a moment—it’s about feeling it. My journey as a wedding photographer in Abuja began many years ago, not in a studio, but behind the lens of a small, weathered camera I bought during my final year at university. Little did I know, that camera would shape the course of my career and my life.
After graduation, I moved to Abuja, Nigeria, for my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and it was during this time that my passion for photography truly began to take shape. Initially, I started with portrait photography and secured a job at Studio 24 Abuja, a place that allowed me to build my technical skills while honing my understanding of light, composition, and framing. But it wasn’t until a quiet afternoon at my best friend’s wedding that I had a pivotal realization.
As I watched the photographer capture fleeting moments of laughter, love, and quiet reflection, something clicked inside me. I realised that a wedding wasn’t just about a single day; it was a collection of raw, beautiful moments that deserved to be preserved forever. That was the moment I knew I wanted to become a wedding photographer in Nigeria.
At first, I focused heavily on perfecting the technical aspects of photography. I spent hours experimenting with lighting and composition, always striving for the "perfect" shot. But it wasn’t until I shot my first wedding that I truly understood what wedding photography was all about. It’s not just about mastering your camera—it’s about reading the room, understanding the emotions of the day, and, most importantly, telling the couple’s unique love story. That was the turning point for me.
Determined to deepen my expertise, I sought an internship with Nonso Okoye, one of the most renowned wedding photographers in Nigeria. Working alongside Nonso was a transformative experience. I learned the art of capturing candid, unscripted moments and witnessed how to create stunning, emotional images that resonate with couples long after the wedding day. It was during this time that I truly understood the power of candid wedding photography—it’s about being present, capturing the intimate, raw moments that tell a story.
After my internship with Nonso, I was ready to take the next step. I focused on building my own brand as a wedding photographer in Abuja, opening my studio and assembling a dedicated team of photographers and support staff. Together, we document weddings across Nigeria—from intimate ceremonies in small villages to grand celebrations in luxurious venues. We specialise in capturing both the traditional and modern aspects of wedding photography in Nigeria, ensuring every couple’s day is beautifully remembered.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with many incredible wedding planners in both Abuja and Lagos, helping couples bring their dream weddings to life. From grand Lagos weddings to traditional northern ceremonies, I’ve shot weddings across all 28 states in Nigeria. Each wedding, regardless of location, has been a unique experience full of surprises, emotions, and beauty.
As I’ve grown as a photographer, so has my approach to shooting weddings. In the beginning, I focused on capturing traditional, posed shots. But over time, I found my true passion in storytelling through candid moments. I believe the best wedding photos are the ones where you don’t even realize the camera is there. The quiet glance, the unspoken connection, the raw emotion—these are the moments I cherish and strive to capture. This shift in mindset has been essential to creating timeless, emotional images that I’m known for today as one of the best wedding photographers in Nigeria.
What drives me as a wedding photographer is the chance to witness and preserve life’s most meaningful moments. On a wedding day, I’m not just a photographer—I’m part of the experience. From the early morning preparations to the last dance of the night, I’m always observing, anticipating, and capturing the little details that make the day so special. Whether it’s the bride’s first look in the mirror, the laughter shared between best friends, or the quiet hand squeeze during the ceremony—these are the moments that matter most to me.
One wedding that stands out in my memory took place at a small, intimate venue nestled in the woods. The couple had been together for years and had faced countless challenges. During the ceremony, the groom shared something so personal and heartfelt that it moved everyone to tears, including me. That was a moment that reminded me why I love this job. It’s not just about taking photos—it’s about being part of something that means so much to someone else.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue pushing the boundaries of my craft. I want to keep experimenting with new techniques, collaborating with amazing couples, and—most importantly—capturing wedding photos that tell stories and will last a lifetime. Every wedding is an opportunity to grow, learn, and create something beautiful, and I can’t wait for what’s next.
